Fermented Foods 101
WHAT ARE FERMENTED FOODS?
Fermented foods are foods that have been produced through the fermentation process. Fermentation involves controlled growth of beneficial microorganisms, such as bacteria and yeast, which break down carbohydrates. This process preserves food and also enhances its nutritional value.
WHY SHOULD WE LEARN ABOUT THIS?
Fermented foods feed beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome. As we learned about in Microbiome 101, your Gut microbiome is considered the command center for wellbeing. It impacts everything: mood, brain function, physical health, and the ability to prevent lifestyle diseases. Fermented foods are one of the most direct ways to nurture it.
WHAT CAN WE EAT THAT IS FERMENTED?
Yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, miso and kombucha are all great. Make sure to read the label and look for live bacteria and no added sugars. A forkful a day is enough to begin!
