Red Light Therapy 101
WHAT IS RED LIGHT THERAPY?
Red light therapy emits a continuous beam of light to stimulate the cell’s energy source- the mitochondria. There is a difference between Red, Near Infrared and Infrared [far infrared] light.
Red light therapy utilizes visible light wavelengths between 630 and 660 nanometers (nm) and penetrates the skin to a depth of approximately 2mm.
Near Infrared light ranges from 810 to 850 nm and Far infrared light exceeds 900 nm. Both near and far infrared consist of a longer wavelength which allows for deeper penetration, reaching up to 5mm into the body .
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Mitochondria, are considered the "powerhouses" of cells because they produce energy. When mitochondria absorb red light, they work better! This can contributes to: improved skin health, pain relief, and muscle and tissue recovery, [by decreasing inflammation + increasing blood flow] better circulation and increased serotonin production to help decrease feelings of anxiety and increase feelings of wellbeing.
HOW CAN WE GET RED LIGHT THERAPY?
You can get red light therapy from an at-home device or a clinic. A device offering red light can support skin health, wound healing and hair growth. A device with Near and Far infrared can affect muscles, joint and tissue healing and enhance overall well-being. Far infrared can also provide pain relief and detoxification.
