Macronutrients 101
WHAT ARE MACRONUTRIENTS?
There are three key macronutrients: fat, protein, and carbohydrates. These three macronutrients give your body the energy it needs to operate.
WHY DO THEY MATTER?
PROTEIN- Protein is the body’s building block. It is used to form and repair muscles, skin, hair and nails. It also enables many of the body’’s vital metabolic functions.
FATS- Fats support the brain’s activity, hormone production and the body’s absorption of other nutrients from the diet.
CARBS- Carbohydrates are the body’s greatest energy source. They provide the body with glucose to use for energy, which can also be stored [as glycogen] for future use. Carbs also play a valuable role in gut health by providing useful fiber to the digestive tract.
HOW DO WE GET THEM FROM OUR FOOD?
PROTEIN- Eggs, Fish, Meat, Yogurt, Legumes, Tofu.
FATS- Olive oil, Nuts, Seeds, Avocado.
CARBS- Complex which contain starch such as vegetables, potatoes and beans. Sugar is the simplest carb but should be avoided.
